How total synthesis is creating antibiotics

Ian Seiple plans to create a new arsenal in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Last year, working under Andrew Myers at Harvard University, US, he was the lead author in a paper that explored a way to synthesise macrolides using a series of simple chemical building blocks. This could allow new antibiotics to emerge which avoid the protective mechanisms of microorganisms.
