Reduced phosphorus material discovered in geological sample offers insight into life’s origins
Lightning strikes may have played a key role in creating the reactive phosphorus compounds required for life to begin on the early Earth. New findings from researchers in the US and UK suggest another potential source of material needed for biological compounds such as DNA and adenosine triphosphate. Until now these important phosphorus-based building blocks for life were mostly believed to have arrived on meteorites.
